Professor Dr. Zulkifli Hasan (now YB Senator) is the former Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement), International Islamic University Malaysia and Dean of Faculty of Syariah and Law, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).
He holds various other academic positions such as Editor for the Malaysian Journal of Syariah and Law, Associate Editor for the Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research, Advisory Board member of the Journal of Contemporary Maqasid Studies, Associate Editor for the Malaysian Journal of Islamic Movements and Muslim Societies, panel of expert on muamalat and halal regulation, JAKIM, Committee on Syariah and Legal Education, JAKIM, University Arbitration Subcommittee of Inns of Court Malaysia, Committee on Syarie Lawyers, JAKIM, AUKU Technical Committee, Board Member of Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Sembilan, Chairman of Majlis Debat Universiti Malaysia (MADUM), Deputy Chairman of Majlis Tatatertib dan Disiplin Universiti Malaysia (MATDUM), guest speaker for Judicial and Legal Training Institute, Prime Minister’s Department and CIBFM, Brunei Darussalam, journal reviewer for numerous international refereed journals as well as a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the Shari’ah Law Reports and the Global Islamic Finance Magazine.
He also sits as the board of director of the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE), Advisory Board member of Marmara University Institute of Islamic Economics and Finance, Istanbul, Turkey, Senior Research Fellow, Universiti Selangor and academic advisor of Dar al Hikmah College, Selangor.
Despite his many academic commitments, Professor Zulkifli is also active in community works as the Board of Trustee of Global Peace Mission Malaysia, former Chairman of Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia Negeri Sembilan, board member of Sekolah Rendah Islam Seremban and Chairman of MYCOM4SDG. He has valuable international experience and actively involved with the civil society in the UK namely Durham Islamic Society and Palestine Solidarity Campaign and in the US, the Association of Muslim Lawyers of New York and Fordham Islamic Society.
In 2013, he represented Malaysia in the prestigious Young Muslim Intellectuals in Southeast Asia Programme in Japan organized by Japan Foundation. He has been selected as a recipient of a 2014 grant to conduct scholarly research at Fordham University, New York, United States of America by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board through the Fulbright US-ASEAN Visiting Scholars Initiative.
In term of industrial experiences, he has worked extensively in Islamic finance industry as an advocate and solicitor, in-house counsel for Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, member of Rules and Regulations Working Committee for Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia and member of corporate governance working committee for Awqaf South Africa.
He also underwent internship at Hawkamah, the Institute for Corporate Governance, Dubai International Financial Centre in 2009 whereby he assisted the Task Force on Corporate Governance in Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) to develop corporate governance guidelines for IFIs in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as well as the Task Force on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) to specifically introduce the S&P/Hawkamah Pan Arab ESG Index for listed companies in 11 MENA markets.
Professor Zulkifli is also actively involved in the area of futures studies and research. He is a member of the World Future Studies Federation, part of the team of the then UNESCO Chair of Futures Studies, USIM and currently the resource person of the IIUM UNESCO Chair of Future Studies- Anticipation for Sustainability and Wellbeing.
He attended various futures workshops, conferences and summit and presented and publish papers on futures literacy and thinking.
As a Shari’ah Committee Member of Affin Islamic Bank, EXIM Bank, Zurich Takaful, Koperasi Belia Islam, Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang, ISRA Council of Scholars and Panel of Experts on Muamalat, JAKIM, Professor Zulkifli has vast experiences in applied banking and finance including takaful. Professor Zulkifli also involves in the Malaysian Syariah Index project as one of the panel of experts.
As an academic, he has published numerous articles in various academic journals such as Humanomics, Islamic Law Quarterly, Malayan Law Journal, Shari’ah Law Reports, International Review of Business Research, Journal of International Banking Law and Regulation, International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management, Kyoto Bulletin of Islamic Area Studies, ISRA International Journal of Islamic Finance and Review of Islamic Economics and presented many papers in various conferences both local and abroad.
His book entitled ‘Shari’ah Governance in Islamic Bank’ published by the Edinburgh University Press won the MAPIM Best Publication in the category of social science in 2013.
Professor Zulkifli also received the prestigious Global Islamic Finance Award as the Upcoming Scholar 2016 and Excellent Alumni Award in conjuction with the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Madrasah Idrisiah graced by DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfurlah.
His research interest include corporate and Shari’ah governance and regulation in Islamic finance.
